FAQ
Question:
What is the difference between a script doctor and a script consultant?
Answer:
A script doctor is a writer hired by a film, television, or theater production company to rewrite an existing script or enhance specific aspects of it, including structure, characterization, dialogue, pacing, themes, and other elements. Script consultants conduct an in-depth screenplay analysis and provide helpful script notes, but do not modify the script.
Question:
Does the consultant become a co-author of the screenplay?
Answer:
No, the consultant does not write the screenplay; rather, they provide written and oral advice on its content.
Question:
Does rewriting the script qualify you as a co-author?
Answer:
The agreement and the scope of services provided determine everything. We adhere to the Writers Guild of America guidelines, which require a screenwriter to contribute at least 50% to the original screenplay to receive co-writing credit.
Question:
Who owns the rights to a screenplay if it is rewritten or created from scratch at the producer's request?
Answer:
All exclusive rights belong to the film company that hires the screenwriter.
Question:
Do you have a standard contract for screenwriter services?
Answer:
The contract is drafted by the lawyers of both parties based on individual agreements and the client's tasks. We comply with the basic agreement of the Writers Guild of America regarding work made for hire, and with the legislation of the client's country.
Question:
How is the cost of services determined?
Answer:
The amount of work and the specific screenwriter will be considered by mutual agreement of the parties. The film's budget and production timeline are also taken into account.
Question:
What if we invited you to co-write a new script with our screenwriter?
Answer:
We will consider such a proposal. If a positive decision is made, each screenwriter must contribute at least 33% to the final draft to receive credit as one of the film's screenwriters.
Question:
What are the criteria for determining each co-author's contribution to the script?
Answer:
Contributions are evaluated based on the final draft, using the following criteria: plot structure, original and altered scenes, character traits and relationships, and dialogue. You can read more about the criteria here: Screen Credits Manual.
